Craft Lesson 8

Holm: Baby Mouse: Our Hero

Topic: "Feelings"

Discussion: Children, much like adults, experience every single feeling and emotion. However, they do not know, exactly, how to properly deal with these different feelings and emotions. Therefore, it is vital for children to learn how to properly deal with different feelings, emotions, and ideas. Also, the fact that they need to understand that other children go through, and/or experience many of the same things.

How to Teach it:
Read the book to the class. Then, (before the actual day of the activity), paint a posterboard with a variety of different colors. Then, with the help of the class, have the children "name" each color according to the darkness of each one. For example, yellow can symbolize happiness while black can symbolize anger or fustration. While guiding the children towards the right direction, have them also guessing and suggesting ideas for the different colors. Then, make a chart of how each of the children are feeling by only numbering the colors, or feelings, according to how the children feel. Then, on a daily basis, have the children talk about their feelings and give them certain "choices" to make in order to accomodate those feelings. Refer to the colors of the feelings and have the children make a "feelings" book by having them each draw and discuss how and what they feel with friends or family (at home or at school).
