Wong: Apple Pie 4th of July

The beautiful illustrations and the way in which the dialogue is placed allows the reader to better understand what and how the little girl feels in the story. This book could be used in the classroom to teach children about the different things that people do on the fourth of July. It could also be used to talk to talk to children about different cultures and how we all interact. My favorite part about the book are the two pages where the little girl, bored as can be, thinks about the "shoelace noodles". The author made sure to exaggerate the little girl's feelings (about not being out celebrating the 4th of July), by making the words stretch out into two pages.

Denisse: you are so right about the illustrations. How the two artists (textual and visual) work together so well is amazing! They so see the story in practically identical ways.

I also really loved the way the pictures tell the story in the book. They also help to leave clues about how the character feels when the author can't completely convey the message.
